Donatella Mei

Born in Florence where she lives and works.

“I like to use transparent materials such as Plexiglass, acetates and glass in my work, to reveal a sense of the “diaphanous,” the depth of the third dimension. For this reason, in the Nineties, I called my first series of works “Trans-appearances.” These were constructed out of acetates on which there were drawings or silk-screenings or even simply Xerox copies. Through those transparent or slightly milky filters, you could glimpse an “appearance” of certain elements from the natural world which, as if they were isolated and made distant by that sort of lens, resembled fragments, ghosts, semblances, shadows. Since 1996, I have also added light (neon, dichroic lamps, optic fibers, LED lights) to those transparent materials to further accentuate the idea of the “diaphanous,” and in a pursuit of a sense of lightness and imponderability through such immateriality.”

"Dal 1996 ho iniziato ad impiegare insieme ai materiali trasparenti la luce (neon, lampade dicroiche, fibre ottiche, led) per accentuare ancora maggiormente il concetto di “diafano“ e ricercare attraverso l’immaterialità la leggerezza e l’imponderabilità."
