Andrea Abati
Born in Prato where he lives and works.
“Since the Eighties I have been putting my detachment from social reporting to work and, while nonetheless remaining profoundly linked to the observation and documentation of places, have been focusing my attention on the transformation of landscapes.” Following one another in succession are a series of interpretations of the course of the Arno river (Attraverso i Villaggi, By Way of the Villages, 1988), oollaborations with such urban planners as Bernardo Secchi, for redesigning the imaginary view of Prato (Prato PRG, 1994), crossing through the Places of Nature (From Guarente to Etna, 2000) or the drawing of landscape and environmental disasters (Il Paesaggio Tradito, Landscape Betrayed, 2005).
And, since 1988, my observation has been focused on Places of Change (Luoghi del Mutamento). An abundant series of large-format pictures which offer a lucid, serene and apocalyptic view of the demolition and reconstruction of industrial buildings in Prato, with their acidic and artificial colors, that necessitate our urgent attention, almost as if they were ruins from a war. Cities also change because people change. Cities are becoming more and more places of transit and transition:new citizens, new inhabitants. Discerning their real inhabitants becomes increasingly difficult and imprecise. So I am now work on reinventing practices involving the community and/or on interventions in the social and/or political spheres, in the sense of producing ideal views of life projects, but also as necessary strategic courses of possible action. (Multiple Identification, Postcards from Prato, 2004; Prato China Guide, 2005; MacroLot Zero, 2006; Regional Administrative Elections 2006).”
